    <description descriptionType="Abstract">&lt;p&gt;A community based cross sectional survey was conducted from&lt;br&gt;
October 15/1991 to December 31g 1991, to measure the prevalence of&lt;br&gt;
hypertension and its determinants in Wonchi Awraja.&lt;br&gt;
From 9 urban kebeles and 184 rural kebeles in the Awraja 24&lt;br&gt;
kebeles were selected by mUltistage sampling from which a total of&lt;br&gt;
2,745 individuals who are 15 years old or abcive were included in&lt;br&gt;
the study.&lt;br&gt;
Relevant measurements of-blood pressure, pulse rate count,&lt;br&gt;
body weight, height, waist girth, and hip girth of the study&lt;br&gt;
subjects were taken and a pretested questionnaire was filled to&lt;br&gt;
assess some of the other determinants of hypertension.&lt;br&gt;
It was found that the prevalence of hypertension in the Awraja&lt;br&gt;
is 8.3t. The urban population has a higher prevalence of&lt;br&gt;
hypertension 11. 8t, than that of the rural population, 7. 5t,&lt;br&gt;
