THE POWER SPECTRUM OF TWO-LEVEL LASERS OPERATING BELOW THE THRESHOLD

The power spectrum of a two-level laser operating below threshold is characterized by a Lorentzian line shape centered at the atomic resonance frequency. The line width of the Lorentzian is determined by the spontaneous emission rate of the excited state. The power spectrum is proportional to the population difference between the excited and ground states,
