Authors/Creators

Description

The primary purpose of this study was to assess the prospects and challenges of women’s economic empowerment in post-war Tigray, with a focus on Maichew town of Tigray. This study used pragmatic research paradigm, descriptive and explanatory research design and mixed methods approach, the research integrated quantitative and qualitative techniques to generate comprehensive evidence. A structured questionnaire was administered to 302 women entrepreneurs using simple random sampling technique, in addition, 6 key informant interviews were conducted using purposive sampling technique with local government officials, women’s association leaders, NGO representatives, and community development officers to capture deeper insights into structural and cultural dynamics. Descriptive and multiple regression method of data analysis was used for the quantitative data and thematic analysis for the qualitative data. The findings indicate that women in Maichew face multifaceted challenges including reduced household income, loss of assets, limited access to credit and training, and weak institutional support mechanisms. Socio-demographic factors such as low educational attainment, heavy caregiving responsibilities, and large household sizes further constrained their capacity to engage in productive economic activities. Cultural and normative barriers continued to restrict women’s decision-making power and mobility. Despite these constraints, the study identified encouraging prospects: women exhibited resilience by re-engaging in small businesses and informal trade, while post-war recovery programs offered by government bodies, NGOs, and cooperatives created new opportunities for financial inclusion and skills development. Regression analysis confirmed that access to credit, training, and institutional support significantly influenced women’s empowerment outcomes. The study concludes that sustainable women’s economic empowerment in post-war Maichew requires multi-dimensional interventions addressing financial, institutional, and socio-cultural barriers. Recommendations include expanding microfinance services, strengthening vocational and entrepreneurial training, improving infrastructure, and mainstreaming gender-sensitive policies in post-war reconstruction to ensure inclusive and resilient economic recovery.
