Earthquake is a natural phenomenon, which can occur any time anywhere. However, it causes buildings, bridges and other structures to experience sudden failure. Earthquakes don't kill people; buildings do. Therefore, buildings must be built in such a way that they are safe during such occurrence. The seismic performance of RC frame structures is often governed by the behavior of its beam-column connections. Under the action of seismic forces, joints of RC frame structures are subjected to shear stresses in the core. A beam-column joint is critical regions which contribute to the integrity of the structure and that transfer forces from one structural element to another. They are generally subjected to axial compression transferred from upper columns. They need proper design and detailing to achieve adequate performance of reinforced concrete frame or else it causes considerable story drift and structural damage.
In this study, the effect of column axial load on shear strength of exterior beam-column joints with limited ductility detail has been investigated. Nonlinear finite element analysis with ABAQUS/Standard is adopted to simulate the beam-column joints. The accuracy of the nonlinear finite element models are verified using experimental results conducted by other researchers. A total of eighteen specimens are conducted by using three test parameters these are column axial load level, joint reinforcement and concrete grade
