"description": "<p>The purpose of this study was to assess the role of cooperative in achieving household food security in rural kebeles of Dire Dawa Administration. The study was guided by the following specific objectives: To explore the various service modalities which Agricultural cooperatives offer to their members, to understand the role of Agricultural cooperatives in promoting household food security, to identify socio economic factors affecting Agricultural cooperative contribution for enhancing household food security, to identify problems facing the Agricultural cooperative in achieving household food security. The study adopted a descriptive research design. Target population was 7290 members of cooperatives totaling from 38 rural kebeles in dire dawa administration. Stratified proportionate random sampling technique was used to select the sample. From each stratum the study used systematic random technique to select 379 respondents. Both primary and secondary data was used during collection of data. Household survey and group discussion were used to gather data for this study. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and econometric methods. Reliability of data collection instrument was measured by Cronbach Alpha and researcher ensured the 0.7 threshold was not met. A Multiple regression model was used to analyze factors influencing average annual post membership income of respondents. The study result indicated that cooperatives are contributing a lot in improving the standards of living of their members residing in the study areas. It helps the members generate income, investments, improves productivity, and increases purchasing power. The cooperatives’ role in achieving the food security of the members continues to be significant. The cooperatives in the study area are engaged in various economic activities such as input supply, production, output marketing, credit and financing which help members in promoting food security. Result from econometric analysis using multiple linear regression models indicates membership period, agricultural inputs land size, age and distance from market place affects post membership income significantly all in positive manner but distance from market place negatively. Education had positive insignificant effect but family size had negative insignificant effect. Therefore, the findings of the study underscore human resource development, family planning, membership increment, more diversified agricultural production practice, and enhancing exiting partnership initiative and coordination efforts with key partners.</p>",
