"description": "<p>The main objective of this study was to assess the role of donor agencies in ensuring food security for pastoral communities in three purposively selected Kebeles in Harshin Woreda of Somali Regional State. To achieve this objective, the study used mixed research design. Both primary and secondary source of data was also used to elicit relevant information. Purposive sampling was used to select three kebeles and for selection of key respondents, this study utilized simple random sampling. To draw sample from 900 relief program beneficiaries, Yamane sample size determination formula was used. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected: the quantitative data were collected using structured questionnaire, whereas the qualitative data were collected using key informant interview and focus group discussion. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the numeric data and to manage this survey data Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 20 was utilized. The study found that there is food insecurity situation that lasts despite interventions made, as 65.9% of studied pastoral households claimed to be insecure. The study disclosed that constraints to livestock is a main cause for food insecurity of the studied pastoral households and the four main constraints to livestock are: drought, lack of markets for stock and their products plus unfavorable market prize, low productivity of pasture lands resulted by a push encroachment/unwanted plants and stock disease. 70.4% of studied pastoral households rank drought as the most essential livestock constraints that leads to food insecurity. Furthermore, this study revealed that selling livestock and Charcoal are the two leading food insecurity coping strategies practiced by almost all studied pastoral households. This study found that 73.9% of studied pastoral households get assistance from WFP when they face food insecurity and this assistance is mainly in the form of free food given to food insecure households. As 71.1% of studied households supported by qualitative results indicated, the relief assistance provided to households is not effective in alleviating food insecurity. The study revealed that 72.5% of surveyed pastoral households receive food assistance which is not labeled with their normal food consumption preferences. To overcome constraints to production of pasture, the study suggested that NGOs and other development partners should work on improving production of pasture by coming up with a sound strategy to clear and avoid spread of push encroachment/aggressive trees to ease pasture production. In order to help the pastoralists to overcome health issues of livestock, the study also recommends that both NGOs and government have to collaborate in providing veterinary services for health of livestock. Since drought is the leading constraint to livestock rising, the researcher recommended that government and NGOs should work with pastoral communities in making a pasture storages to resist droughts.</p>",
