  "description": "<p><strong>ABSTRACT:</strong> The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of school leadership in improving students&rsquo; academic achievement in secondary schools of Sidama Zone. To serve this purpose explanatory research design was employed. For the study, 8 Woredas were selected using simple random technique. From these selected woredas 10 secondary schools were included using simple random sampling technique. From these sample schools, 10 kebele educations and training board and 10 parent ant teachers association members were selected by using purposive sampling, while 170 teachers were selected by using simple random sampling techniques and 30 principals were included through comprehensive sampling technique. Questionnaire was used as main tool of data collection. Interview and focus group discussion was used to substantiate the data gathered through questionnaires. Document review was also part of data collection for the study. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics while content analysis approach was used to analyze qualitative data. The findings of the study revealed that school leadership roles to develop annual school-wide goals focused on student learning and establish measurable goals aligned to the vision and mission of academic success were low. School leaders practice promote in communication among teachers, supporting professional development of teachers, providing individual support for teachers and developing best practice of the school to improve students&rsquo; academic performance were found poorly performed. Lack of confidence on the part of principals to exercise leadership, lack of courage and commitment of the principals and shortage of adequate guidance and support from higher official were reported as the major challenges for school leadership in improving students&rsquo; academic achievement. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the school leaders should involve teachers, students and stakeholders in communication and decision-making process and school leaders need to provide adequate resources support collaborative work among school community in order to improve students&rsquo; academic achievement.</p>",
