INFLUENCE OF PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT ON STUDENTS' ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS OF ABAY CHOMAN WOREDA

  "description": "<p>ADVISOR: KEFYALEW WAKTOLE (PhD)</p>\n\n<p>ABSTRACT The overall objective of the study was to assess influence of parental involvement on students&rsquo; academic achievement in primary schools of Abay Choman Woreda. The study used correlation research design. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches employed. About 144 teachers, and 282 parents selected by random sampling method. On the other hand 7 PTA and 7 principals were participated by availability sampling. Parents, students and teachers&rsquo; questionnaire, as well as principal&rsquo;s and PTA interview, and document analysis of students roster served as data collection instruments. Data obtained through close ended questionnaire were presented in tables and analyzed by quantitative counts, percentage and mean scores of responses. Data obtained from open-ended questionnaire, interview and documents were organized and presented through narrative descriptions. Accordingly, descriptive statistics such as frequency count and percentage computed to indicate the background characteristics of the respondents whereas mean score, correlation and linear regressions analysis were computed using SPSS v 23. Parents moderately involved in primary schools of Abay Choman Woreda. In addition, students&rsquo; academic achievement in primary schools from average score dominated between the categories 60 to 70 average score and labelled as satisfactory. Similarly, the second leading categories of student&rsquo;s average mean scored labelled poor performance scoring an average between 50-59 in all subjects in academic year of 2015. In addition, the finding revealed there were strong, positive and significant relationship between parental involvement in primary school and students&rsquo; academic achievement. Similarly, parental involvement in school had a magnitude of 26.7 time&rsquo;s significant positive influence on students&rsquo; academic achievement other things remain constant in primary schools of Abay Choman woreda. Based on results the study recommended that parents should properly involve in primary school and collaboratively work for mobilizing local resources in order to enhance student academic achievement.
