"description": "
ABSTRACT
\n\n
The potential of smallholder-irrigated agriculture to enhance food security has led the government of Ethiopia to invest significantly in irrigation establishments. Hence, this study was undertaken to analyze the impact of small-scale irrigation utilization on household food security in the Central Ethiopia region, Silte zone, Hulbareg Woreda. This research has five chapters: chapter one introduction, chapter two literature review, chapter three methodology, chapter four results and discution, chapter five conclusion and recommendation. In this study the researcher used a mixed research method that combined an explanatory research design and a qualitative approach to collect relevant data. Using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies together yielded a better understanding of the research problem than using using either method alone. The data was collected by using cross-sectional survey from 189 population that 131are non- irrigators and 58 are irrigators. Both primary and secondary data were collected and used in this study. Descriptive statistics and propensity-score matching were used to determine the impacts of small-scale irrigation utilization on household food security. The average treatment effect of the propensity matching result shows that 72.4% of irrigation user households ensure better food security than irrigation non-user households. From irrigation non-users, only 20% of them ensured food security. Applying a propensity score matching technique, the study found that average small-scale irrigation has a profound impact on improving small lholder farmer households food security. The result revealed that irrigation user’ households on average intake daily calories of 649.12 kcal more than non-users and this result are statistically significant. In addition, the findings of the study indicated that the main challenge of irrigation in the study area is the lack of input supply and irrigation facilities and market fluctuation. The study concluded that irrigation is a key, valuable potential solution to ensure food security in the study area. Therefore, it is recommended that the government and all other participants focus on irrigation to ensure food security in the study area.
",
