<dct:description><p>Abstract</p> <p>Onion (Allium cepa L.) is one of the most important warm-season vegetable crops cultivated in Ethiopia. It is grown largely by smallholder farmers and few commercial growers mainly under irrigation and lower share using rain. The study has an objective to conduct value chain analysis of onion and marketing channels in Silti Woreda. To pin main actors and their functions along the onion value chain, onion marketing channels and market outlet choices of small holder farmers and analyze factors affecting quantity of onion supplied to the market by producers. The study has been conducted in major onion producing regions of Ethiopia in Central, Ethiopia, Siltie Zone. Both primary and secondary data were used for this study. The primary data were collected from onion producers, traders, and consumers using structured questionnaire. Secondary data were collected from Silti Woreda agriculture offices. A snow ball sampling technique was applied to select the sample households (producers) and traders. Descriptive statistics, value chain analysis and econometric analysis were used for analyzing the data. Multiple linear regressions were used to identify the factors affecting quantity of onion supplied and market channel choice, respectively. Households mean age and farm size was 36.77 years and the average land size was 1. 73 ha, more than 78% of this land was cultivated through irrigation. 29.2% of households were illiterate in Silti Woreda. Fewer than 50% of the respondents were produced onion by their own credit access. Input suppliers, producers, and traders were participated in onion value chain and marketing channels. A majority of famers were selling their onion product to wholesalers and retailers. The total gross marketing margin was 69.23%. The average production cost for onion producers was 86084.4 birr/ha or 26.67 birr/kg. Education level, onion farming experience, quantity of onion produced, credit Access and membership to marketing cooperatives were found the significant determinants of quantity of onion supplied. Onion market channels were significantly determined by participation to training, experience of growing onion, family size, farm area covered by onions, education level of the household head, quantity onion supplied, frequency of getting extensions service and selling price of onion. While distance to the nearest market was negative and significant and credit access was also negative and insignificant.</p></dct:description>
