<dct:description>
Abstract
In all agro-ecological parts of Ethiopia, goat production practices are potential opportunities to sustain subsistence rural livelihoods. This study therefore examined the role of goat production in supporting rural livelihoods in drought-prone areas of Waghimira administrative zone, northeast Amhara, Ethiopia.
This study employed a cross-sectional research design and was based on both qualitative and quantitative research approaches. The survey data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. In this study, a multistage sampling procedure was used to select sample households. The researcher selected Abergele district in the purposive sampling method due to goat production potential, and three kebele, such as Marnet, Seria, and Wirkadibnu, were selected based on the agroecology zone of the study area. The quantitative data were collected from 257 randomly selected goat owner households, while the qualitative data were collected from purposefully chosen FGD and KI participants. To address the objective, the researcher used both descriptive and inferential statistics. Inferential statistics such as chi square and Pearson correlation Independent sample t tests were used.
This study has found that generally goat husbandry is an integral part of subsistence households, contributing to diversifying livelihood income and providing milk and meat for home consumption. The findings of the study show that constraints such as diseases, feed shortages, drought, and limited access to veterinary services were major barriers affecting goat production practices. Spatially, diseases were the major constraint across all kebeles, with farmers in Seria and Wirkadibnu ranking them as the most critical issue (indexed 0.5), as well as Marnet ranked the third (indexed 0.17). Feed shortages, particularly during dry seasons, present another substantial challenge in the Marnet and Wirkadibnu indexes of 0.40 and 0.32, respectively. Drought (indexed 0.43) was found to be a to be a major constraint, and Marnet ranked as the first limiting barrier. This study recommends that enhancing goat production through targeted interventions can contribute significantly to sustainable rural livelihoods in the scenario of changing climate.
</dct:description>
