Assessment of Human Resource Management Practices and Its Effect On Employees' Performance: - The Case of Dire Dawa University.

Human resource management is the practice of managing people to achieve better performance. The purpose of this study was to assess human resource management practices and its effect on employees" performance in Dire Dawa University administrative staff. Thus, in order to meet the objectives of the study, the researcher used a descriptive research design. In addition, the researcher also developed, distributed questionnaires, collected and analyzed the data with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 25 software by using descriptive statistics of frequencies and percentages and inferential statistics which includes Pearson"s correlation and multiple regressions to analyze the data and then interpretation was made on it. Samples of 320 administrative staff employees were selected from the population of 1611 by using stratified sampling techniques and taken proportionally from each strata then a simple random sampling technique was applied. 288 study participants responded the questionnaires which made the response rate was 90%. Using quantitative data, the descriptive statistics result showed that the perceptions of employees of administrative staff of Dire Dawa University towards the human resource management practices (Performance appraisal, training and promotion) were low. In addition, the Correlation results indicated that Performance appraisal, training and promotion were positively correlated with the employee performance. Moreover, the multiple regression analysis indicated that the selected human resource practices have statistically significant effect on employees" performance in Dire Dawa University of administrative staffs. Among the recommendations made were that each directorate needs to design standard performance appraisal criteria which are specific and directly related criteria that can measure employees" job duties and responsibility specific to the job. Secondly, since employees are greatest assets of the organization, employee training should be considered as essential investments and conducted in order to increase the knowledge and skills of the employees result in improving employees" performance capacity to make them competent to face the dynamic challenges of globalization. Finally, the selection criteria for promotion opportunities should be job related and the process also conducted in a fairly and transparent manner.
