<dc:description>A railway drainage system gives vital role for effective, efficient operation of rail track. This study worked on an assessment of railway drainage system problem along the Addis Ababa Mieso railway line, specifically on Akaki rives crossing. It was done to check adequacy of hydraulic structure provided on Akaki River crossing by undertaking hydrologic and hydraulic analysis. Hydrologic modeling of the Akaki catchment area was developed by HEC-GeoHMS program with the help of Arc-GIS and hydrologic analysis was computed by HEC-HMS program. The catchment land use, soil type, rainfall data, Akaki river stream flow data, etc were used to develop hydrological model. SCS unit hydrograph and flood frequency analysis methods were used to estimate instantaneous peak design discharge for 50 and 100 year return period. Model input parameters were calibrated and verified with observed flow data of the river at Akaki gauging station. Design discharge computed in this case for 50/100 year return period was 743.2m3/s and 834.5m3/s respectively at bridge location from catchment area of 894km2, where these values were used to check adequacy of the bridge. Hydraulic models were developed to determine water-surface profiles along the stream reaches for the discharges established in the hydrologic analyses The HEC-RAS step-backwater hydraulic analysis model was used to determine water-surface profiles for the bridge. Cross sectional elevation data, hydraulic-structure geometries, roughness coefficients along with peak discharge estimated were used as input for the model. Based on available data’s water surface profile for peak discharge was determined by the program.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Urban rail transit is an all-encompassing term for various types of local rail systems providing passenger service within and around urban or suburban areas. Many of this urban rail transit system encompass different types of aerial structures/bridges. Apart from similar highway bridges, fulfilling all the design and construction requirements, Railway aerial structures come in many forms, and each has a different level of interaction with the tracks carried. Addis Ababa light rail project is currently under construction by Chinese contractors (CREC: China railway engineering corporation).which is the first in the country of its kind as far as light railway transit system is concerned. The research mainly focus at assessing of the design approach of different design standards and improved construction methods in a manner to suitably fit our existing conditions. Finally, the study adopts the best practice of design and construction for use in our light railway bridges and also hint for further practice.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Background: Health workforce demand and supply increased last two decade. In Ethiopia, about 84% of the country"s total populations live in rural areas. However, shortages and imbalances in physician workforce distribution between urban and rural areas among different regions are enormous. A little was known about medical students" intention to work in the rural area after completing medical school. This study was done to assess the intention of undergraduate medical students towards rural work settings and to identify factors associated with intention to work in the rural areas. Methods: A cross-sectional study was employed in January to April 2018 among 342 (254 male Vs 88 female) medical students (year IV to Year V) in three public medical schools in Ethiopia. Stratified random sampling technique was used. The pretested self-administered questionnaires were used. Data was entered into EPI-data version 3.1 and exported to Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 24 for analysis. A bivariate and multivariate analysis of logistic regression was used to identify associated factors with 95% of confidence interval.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Emergency contraception (EC) is a method used to prevent the occurrence of pregnancy after unprotected intercourse. Unwanted pregnancy is a common problem among young unmarried women in Ethiopia where more than 60% of all pregnancies among adolescents is unwanted. Despite the availability this method, the prevalence of abortion is still high however, little is known about use of EC and factors influencing its use among girls attending higher education in Ethiopia. Objective: To assess magnitude and factors affecting emergency contraceptive use and prevalence of unwanted pregnancy among female students in Aksum University. Method: A cross-sectional quantitative study was done among 628 female under graduate students in Aksum University using structured self administered questionnaire. Multistage sampling technique was used to select participants. Data were cleaned and analyzed using SPSS version 21. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was done to identify independent predictors of EC and variables with p-value <0.05 considered as significant predictors.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Thermal damage caused by frictional heat of rolling-sliding contact is one of the most important failure forms of wheel and rail. The coupled mechanical–thermal behavior of wheel and rail materials under rolling contact is studied to determine the temperature rise due to the frictional heat. The wheel–rail frictional rolling contact problem is solved using the both hertz three– dimensional finite element (FE) method. The FE model considers the wheel tread–rail top contact with partial-slip and converts the frictional energy into the heat as an attempt to estimate the temperature rise. The assembly of wheel-rail geometry is created by CATIA V5R20 software. The finite element program ANSYS workbench is used to model the couple of thermos-mechanical rolling –sliding contact analysis and used to simulate the loading and boundary conditions of the wheel-rail rolling/sliding contact. When the couple of mechanical – thermal (maximum pressure and different heat flux) applied on the wheel – rail rolling/ sliding contact, it generates a maximum amount of heat and stress between rail and wheel. This cause plastic strain development and reduction of stress fatigue life for the increased value of loads that resulted from slippage as can note from analysis and simulation results. Rolling contact stress states and material response of wheel – rail under four traction coefficient and the same varying of sliding velocity were investigated. 3D coupled thermomechanical FE model were developed to analyze the temperature rise due to high applied load at contact and the thermal influence on residual stress-strain, wear and rail life</dc:description>

<dc:description>Background: In order to slow the current rapid population growth particularly in less developed countries, family planning programs have always been considered as the intervention of choice. These programs, however, are seen to give little attention to the roles that could be played by men regarding family planning. Different studies focus mostly on the role that is played by women neglecting those of men. As a consequence, there is shortage of information on factors which prevent men to be involved on family planning in Ethiopia. Objective: To assess the role of currently married men in family planning utilization in rural communities of Jeldu Woreda, West Shoa Zone Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on a total of 804 currently married men in the age group of 15-59 years. A total of 6 kebeles were selected from 38 rural kebeles of the Woreda using simple random sampling method. Study households were selected from each kebeles through systematic random sampling. A pre-tested, structured questionnaire was used for data collection.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Studies on climate change adaptation recognize the importance of agro-ecology based research for designing context-specific policies and programs to climate change. This study, therefore, applied a case-study approach to examine farmers’ preference for climate change adaptation strategies and the factors deriving their preference. Thus, households’ preference for five types of climate change adaptation strategies (multiple cropping, livestock, soil conservation, irrigation, and changing planting dates) is identified and the determinants of the preference are analyzed using Rank-Ordered Logit Model. The results indicated that multiple cropping is the most preferred and frequently applied adaptation strategy to climate change, while livestock production is the least.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The aim of this paper is to investigate empirically the ability of Nation Bank of Ethiopia to
control the stock of money supply. This investigation seems to conform to the ongoing
controversy surrounding the exogeneity /endogeneity hypothesis regarding the money supply i.e.
the controllability/non-controllability of the money supply by the Central Bank. The paper has first
tested the money multiplier model which says money is exogenous and thus controllable by central
banks. We examine the constancy and Stationarity of the money multiplier and the results
suggest that the money multiplier remains non stationary for the entire sample period. We then
tested cointegration between money supply and monetary base and find the evidence of
cointegration between two variables. The coefficient restrictions are satisfied only partially. The
result from this model shows it will be difficult to use the money multiplier model as a frame
work for monetary policy.</dc:description>

<dc:description>It remained a big intellectual puzzle both on theoretical and empirical front that the question of whether or not fiscal policy spurs economic growth. Proponents of government intervention believe that government involvement in economic phenomena is crucial for growth, but opponents have a view that government involvements are naturally bureaucratic and unproductive and therefore retarding rather than promoting growth. This contradicting view comes up with equally mixed results in the empirical literature. In line with argument, objective of this study is to contribute towards the literature on fiscal policy, public investment and economic growth in Ethiopia. This study used time series techniques and applied empirical model by Kneller et al (1999) and Bleaney et al (2000) to investigate the link between various components of fiscal policy on growth on annual data for the period 1981 – 2013. It employed the autoregressive distributed lag estimation technique. Results of the bound tests indicated that there was a long-run relationship between the variables. Disaggregating government expenditure into productive and unproductive and tax revenue into distortionary and non distortionary. The study found unproductive expenditure and nondistortionary tax revenue to be neutral to growth as predicted by economic theory. Productive expenditure has positive effect on growth while there was evidence of distortionary effects on growth. On the other hand, government investment was found to be beneficial to growth in the long run. These results give right signal to policy makers in Ethiopia in formulating expenditure and tax policies to ensure unproductive expenditures are reduced while at the same time boosting public investment.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This study is about the preliminary assessment of the perceived impact of Business Process Reengineering implementation on the human resource dimensions in selected public institutions. It is a survey research. The target population of the study was the employees of the selected institutions, namely Ministry of Capacity Building (MOCB) Ministry of Education (MOE), Ministry of Trade and Industry (MOTI) and Ethiopian Civil Service College (ECSC). A sample size of 70 out of 700 employees was taken. The relevant data was collected through survey questionnaire and random sampling technique was employed when distributing the survey questionnaires. Out of the 70 questionnaires distributed to the randomly selected employees, 55 were properly completed and returned. This represents a response rate of approximately 78.6% from the distributed questionnaires. The data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics and inferences were made accordingly. Major findings revealed that the impact of BPR implementation in the selected organizations was negative in most core human resource dimensions (i.e. reward, promotion, work life, etc,), except empowerment and career development. Some recommendations that might enable BPR to be a reliable vehicle in the process of achieving effectiveness and efficiency in public institutions in the long run are presented.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Fiscal decentralization is seen as part of a reform agenda in developing countries to strengthen regional and local governments. It is believed that it improves the efficiency of public service delivery through preference matching and allocation efficiency. In light of this, this study was conducted to assess the practices of Woreda level fiscal decentralization in Addis Ababa City Government. In doing this study, explanatory mixed method research design was followed. Subjects of the study were government officials working in selected Woredas and sub-cities of Addis Ababa city. In the study, multi-stage sampling technique was used to select representative respondents. To this effect, one hundred ninety-two participants were selected using multi-stage sampling technique. Besides, sub-city and Woreda Finance and Economic Development Bureaus officials were purposely selected to conduct key informant interviews. The data gathering instruments were questionnaire, key informant interviews, and document analysis. The study followed statistical tests to test the research hypotheses. It applied Kruskal Wallis test of significance. The study involved strict respect for informed consent, voluntary participation, and confidentiality. The findings of the statistics tests indicates that respondents’ responses concerning autonomy of Woredas in planning and budgeting, revenue generation and retention, expenditure assignments were significantly different. This implies that there is absence of uniformity in the practices of these aspects of fiscal decentralization in the city. On the contrary, the respondents’ response concerning the functionalities of institutional and legal frameworks, inter-governmental fiscal relations, challenges, and constraints of fiscal decentralization, were not significantly different. In general, the practice of fiscal decentralization in the city was limited as existing institutional and legal frameworks were in short of clarity and uniformity. Respondents stated that Woreda administrations had weak revenue base, and need clear planning and budgeting, and expenditure assignment autonomy. Based on the findings of the study, the research hence recommended that existing institutional and legal frameworks should be structured in the way that it enables Woreda administrations to generate and utilize sufficient revenues, plan and budget their own activities, have clear autonomy of expenditure assignments. Inter-governmental fiscal relations should also be planned to reduce the vertical imbalances observed at Woreda Administration level.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This study on Government Support Interventions and Autonomy of Agricultural Cooperatives tried to analyze the overall approach and focus areas of government support to agricultural cooperatives in enhancing their capacity and its implications on their autonomy. In addition, the importance, strength, and weakness of government support to agricultural cooperatives have also been explored in this thesis. The study used qualitative and quantitative approach of data collection and analysis by means of structured questionnaires to sample members and employees of primary cooperatives and union as the basic data source and structured interviews with experts in the cooperative sector. The study shows that Ethiopian cooperative support bodies at different levels of government and administration put significant effort to support agricultural cooperative development. The supports to agricultural cooperatives in different tier levels vary from regulating the cooperative sector with just laws to direct human resource and material support. These supports to agricultural cooperatives are mostly in the form of trainings, cooperative services and relatively little material support through government support bodies in federal, regional, zone and lower levels.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The objective of commercial banks in Ethiopia is to make profits and thus satisfy the needs of their respective owners. The making of profits and even staying on board of these conventional banks depend on the strategies adopted by each bank to mobilize deposits from the public that is an input to earn income for most conventional banks. In order to make good strategies, however, the banks should know what factors determine the deposit mobilization activity in the real world. This paper then explores the theoretical as well as empirical analysis of those factors having an impact on deposit volume in banks and even assesses which ones are more significant or less significant. To do the practical investigation in terms of commercial banks in Ethiopia, the researcher collected the relevant data from annual reports of twelve years (2001/2-2012/13) and from questionnaires and interviews made to senior bank officers of seven banks. The data is analyzed through the econometric analysis using SPSS software.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The main purpose of this study was to assess the practices of implementation of active learning approaches in Wolita Sodo University Health Sciences College. To meet the objective of the study, a convergent parallel mixed design was employed. Lottery method was used to select the department of public health officer, from which students were sampled. The academic director of the college, 21 preclinical teachers and all 81 students from the second batch of department of public health officer were selected using availability sampling technique. Quantitative data were collected from all students and teachers using structured and pretested questionnaire. The academic director and selected teachers were interviewed using interview guide. Data analysis was done in three phases. First, analysis of the quantitative data was done in SPSS Version 20 and percentages, means and frequencies were used. Second, qualitative data was analyzed considering the research questions, using framework coding which is a deductive approach. Finally, quantitative and qualitative results were merged. Almost all instructors and students had a positive perception of active learning. Teachers are practicing active learning sometimes but the level of their practice was not satisfactory. Lecture was found to be the most commonly employed teaching technique followed by individual assignments, group work/discussion and question and answer methods. Shortage of time, large amount of contents to be covered during one classroom and lecturers and students tendency towards the traditional lecture method were found to be the most serious factors among the problems that affects the practice of active learning negatively. It has been recommended that teachers should be committed to discharge their roles to exercise active learning methodologies. Additionally, to improve the level of implementation of active learning, the administration of the college should continuously identify and solve those problems by developing a working group in coordination with teachers, students and other stakeholders.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Liquidity can be defined as the ability of a financial institution to meet all legitimate demands for funds (Yeager and Seitz 1989). The aim of this paper is therefore on twofold: firstly to identify determinants of commercial banks liquidity in Ethiopia and then to see the impact of banks liquidity up on financial performance through the significant variables explaining liquidity. Balanced fixed effect panel regression was used for the data of eight commercial banks in the sample covered the period from 2000 to 2011. Eight factors affecting banks liquidity were selected and analyzed. The results of panel data regression analysis showed that capital adequacy, bank size, share of nonperforming loans in the total volume of loans, interest rate margin, inflation rate and short term interest rate had positive and statistically significant impact on banks liquidity. Real GDP growth rate and loan growth had statistically insignificant impact on banks liquidity. Among the statistically significant factors affecting banks liquidity capital adequacy and bank size had positive impact on financial performance whereas, non-performing loans and short term interest rate had negative impact on financial performance. Interest rate margin and inflation had negative but statistically insignificant impact on financial performance. Therefore, the impact of bank liquidity on financial performance was non-linear/positive and negative.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Analyzing impact of macroeconomic instability on economic growth and private capital accumulation from the year 1974 to 2013 is the main objective of the study. Rather than using one variable as a proxy for macroeconomic instability, the researcher attempts to calculate macroeconomic instability index by using four variables: budget deficit, public debt, exchange rate variability and inflation by utilizing UNDP HDI methodology. In specification of regression equations, endogenous growth model and accelerator model are used for growth and capital accumulation equation respectively. Empirical analysis has been performed by using Johansson maximum likelihood method, the result shows that there is a long run relationship among the variables entered in both models. Both the long run and short run result shows that, macroeconomic instability has a detrimental effect on both economic growth and private capital accumulation. Based on the finding, the major policy implication of this study is that, poor management of macroeconomic with the adoption of incorrect and illogical fiscal and monetary policies and passive reaction against shocks will intensify the macroeconomic instability. Due to this, the way of reaction to the shocks is very important.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This research has been done to solve the relatively poor performance problem of different public companies and enhance economic growth of Ethiopian economy through public sector capacity building. Accordingly, this study examined the success of Ethiopian Airlines, its determinant factors as well as lessons that can be taken by other public companies from its experience. In doing that, descriptive as well as econometric analysis based on performance indicators and endogenous growth model are respectively used. The results of descriptive analysis indicate that Ethiopian Airlines is a successful enterprise. This is mainly because the airline is a profitable, with a culture of continuous improvement, paramount productivity growth, higher market share etc. In this regard, several factors have contributed for the success of the airline: its working standard, overall system, dedication of workforce, safety trend, best practice, current and recurrent trainings, formation history, state art technology, autonomous management, its market strategy, visionary leadership style etc. Similarly, the results of econometric analysis reveal that the major determinants for the growth/success of Ethiopian Airlines are physical capital accumulation and human capital creation. Therefore, it is the combination of the earlier qualitative determinants with both physical and human capital that has played a significant role for its success</dc:description>

<dc:description>Measurement of the impact of HIV/AIDS on mortality is of fundamental importance to develop programmes to mitigate the effects of the epidemic in Ethiopia, similar to other countries in subSaharan Africa. Little is known about the HIV/AIDS-related mortality in the general population of the country and especially in Addis Ababa. A prospective surveillance of deaths at burials in Addis Ababa is initiated, since information on vital events in Ethiopia, as in most of sub-Saharan Africa, is defective. In this study, verbal autopsy (VA) and clinician review techniques were used to assess the cause specific mortality (CSM) in general and HIV/AIDS-related mortality in particular, in the general population of Addis Ababa. Since February 8, 2001 a prospective surveillance started at all the available and functioning burial sites (n=70) in the rural and urban localities of Addis Ababa, collecting information on name, sex, age, address, date of burial and presumed cause of death of the deceased. Burial sites included: all 51 orthodox churchyards, eight mosque-based, seven municipal-based, two community-based “Yesenbete mahber”, one catholic-based, and one Jewish “Bete-Israel” cemetery. Verbal autopsy (VA) was conducted at 414 selected households, three to four months after death, involving 10 teams of two interviewers. Two independent clinicians reviewed and assessed the VA questionnaires and assigned causes of death.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Ethiopian Leather development strategy has put the shoe industry on the forefront position to accelerate the development of the sector. The study focuses on Ethiopian shoe industry competitiveness and its export market performance. The main purpose is to find the factors that are impediments for competitiveness of shoe industry at firm level and to find out the peculiar problems of shoe manufacturing in the export activities. Concepts of competitiveness and measures have been discussed. The Porter diamond model has been chosen to analyze firm level competitiveness. The result depicts the very low status of competitiveness of the Ethiopian shoe industry. At the firm level, all the determinants of competitiveness (Factor conditions, related and support industries, firm structure, strategy and rivalry, Demand conditions) are found to be insignificant. Among the factors, related and supporting industries and factor conditions mainly limit the firms from utilizing their cost advantage to sustained market share on the domestic as well as on the international market.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Background: The primary responsibility of a blood transfusion service (BTS) is to provide a safe, sufficient and timely supply of blood and blood products so as to ensure that blood donation causes no harm to the donor. The Copper Sulphate (CuSO4) screening test has been found to erroneously include anemic people and exclude eligible people and its performance is not well studied in poor settings like Ethiopia. Objectives: To determine the rate of false deferral and false pass of prospective blood donors screened by the copper sulphate gravimetric test from April to June 2016 at Hossana blood bank, Ethiopia.. Methods: A cross- sectional study was carried out from April to June 2016 in Hossana blood bank. Blood sample from 422 voluntary donors were collected and analyzed by CuSo4 gravimetric test and automated hematology analyzer (Cell-dyn 1800). The data was entered in Epi-Data 3.1 and analyzed by SPSS 20 and interpreted accordingly. P value less than 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Agreement between the two methods was determined using the Kappa coefficient.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The main objective of this paper was to examine the long run nature and direction of inter sectoral linkages between agriculture, industry and service sectors with a view to identifying the main growth stimulating sector in the economy in the case of Ethiopia. The study used time series data for the period between 1974 and 2016. The researcher estimated an econometric model that incorporates the linkages among the sectors using a Vector Error Correction Model. Johansen’s co-integration test confirms the existence of one long-run relationship among the variables. Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) results indicated a strong long-run relationship between industry and service sector and also between agriculture and service sector. On the other hand, there is only a statistically significant association between industry and service sectors in the short run. Short run Granger causality test result also supports this outcome showing a strong unidirectional causality from industry to service sector. On the other hand, results of variance decomposition analysis and impulse response function suggest that service sector plays an important role in determining the growth of both the agriculture and industry through its positive innovative impact in medium to long-term perspective. The result of this paper suggests that government should be considered this directions and magnitudes of the inter-sectoral linkages before they set a policy and should focus on economic policies that promote multidimensional inter sectoral linkage.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Medical equipment are essential for a functioning health system. Medical equipment in
particular are crucial in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness and disease, as well
as patient rehabilitation. The objective of this study is to analyse the medical equipment supply
chain management of public hospitals under Addis Ababa Regional Health Bureau. Both
quantitative and qualitative approaches are used in an explanatory and descriptive research
design. A total of 339 samples were taken from 2231 population. Across sectional data was
collected using Simple random sampling and purposive sampling methods for quantitative and
qualitative data collection respectively. Structured questionnaires and open ended interview
questions are used as a tool for data collection. The data were analysed using both descriptive
and inferential statistical tools. Moreover, the result was described using mean, frequency and
standard deviation, and the researcher was also applied parametric statistical test
(correlations, and regression analysis (Simple, multiple)) to interpret and analyze the data,
using Statistical Package for Social Science version 21.The findings showed that the efficiency
of medical equipment supply chain management in public hospitals is found to be strongly
affected by the procurement, inventory, transportation and warehouse management practices.
Majority of respondents disagree for having good procurement, inventory, transportation and
warehouse management in public hospitals under Addis Ababa Regional Health Bureau. From
the overall findings we can conclude that medical equipment supply chain management
practices of public hospitals under Addis Ababa Regional Health Bureau is inefficient which
will contribute for not giving quality health service. This is mainly due to poor practices in the
procurement, inventory, transportation and warehouse management. From the findings of the
study 44.5 percent of the variance in efficiency of medical equipment supply chain was
explained by the variance of explanatory variables, while the rest 55.5 percent was contributed
by other factors that were not included in the model. Hence it is recommended that Federal
Ministry of Health should work for improving of medical equipment supply chain management
practices of facilities such as to prepare updated medical equipment list nationally and at each
level of the facility, to develop health commodities procurement policy. Addis Ababa regional
health bureau together with hospital management and staffs should give attention and work
cooperatively to improve the practices of medical equipment supply chain management of
hospitals.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The main objective of this study is to access the fiscal response to external aid inflows in Ethiopia, specifically
to study the impact of foreign aid inflows on public expenditure, revenue and domestic borrowing in Ethiopia.
The paper provides a critical review of literature on the aid-fiscal relation, and then applies a VAR/VECM
and impulse response analysis, using data for the period 1961-2007.The study is a good indication that
disaggregated data utilization could point out which variables are responsive to changes in external shocks. By
studying the particular fiscal dynamics in Ethiopia using three separate models, the study finds that foreign aid
in the form of grant and loan has had a positive impact on government expenditure (loan being pro-investment
and grant being pro-consumption), both have a negative impact on domestic borrowing (domestic borrowing
being more elastic to a change in grant) and indirect tax collection and no effect on the direct one. Moreover, by
incorporating total ODA inflow in a separate model, the study tried to analyze the joint impact of budgetary
grant and loan, and that of off -budgetary ODA. The results support the conclusion that aid inflows increase
public expenditure and are biased to be pro- investment. While total ODA flows have a negative impact on
revenue of the government and borrowing from domestic sources, suggesting that aid and domestic borrowing are
close substitutes and that higher aid flows displace domestic revenues. In the final analysis to mitigate the
undesirable impacts of aid, building a better national capacity to collect domestic revenue and regulatory
schemes by donors to avoid possible problems of aid fungiblity should be put in place.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Cross-sectional institution based survey using self-administered anonymous questionnaire and Focus group discussion, was conducted among female students of Addis Ababa University to determine the magnitude, immediate consequences and socio demographic correlates of sexual coercions. A total of 612 female students were involved in the study. The quantitative study revealed that the prevalence of lifetime completed and attempted rape was 12.7 %( 95%CI, 10.06, 15.33) and 27.5% (95%CI, 3.96, 31.3) respectively. Sexual harassment in lifetime and 12 month period was reported in 58% and 41.8% of students, respectively. Rape was significantly associated for those students, who have boyfriends, and from divorced family as a risk factor, and for those living with both parents before joining university and money sent as needed with near by living families as a protective factor. Promise by friends, physical force and alcohol use were also contributing to the offence. Unwanted pregnancy, abortion and psychological disturbances were the immediate reported consequences of rape victims, which signify the role of rape in these health problems. After their victimization 93.6% of the victims didn't share the event with anybody. Victims reported about the perpetuator that 93.6% was a person known by them.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The objective of this paper was to investigate the determinants of gross domestic saving in the Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda using annual panel datasets form 1991-2012.In this study, effort has been made to identify the fundamental determinants of domestic saving in the region of East Africa using the Fixed Effects (FE) model. Estimated results revealed that GDP per capita growth (gdpp) and degree of urbanization (urb) are the only significant determinants of gross domestic saving in the region. However, inflation rate, working age group as a percentage of total population (py), age dependency ratio to working age (agedp), money and quasi money as a percentage of GDP (m2), and government expenditure as a percentage of GDP (ggov) are found to be not statistically significant at the conventional levels. It seems fairly imperative to suggest that governments should give amplified concern for GDP per capita growth and degree of urbanization more than other candidates if they are in a position to design policies for the sake of boosting up domestic savings. On the other hand, this in turn, may be boosting up sustainable economic growth through encouraging investment over the region of interest.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Local economies often get developed with the participation of government, non-government organizations, and the community at large. Among the community, micro and small enterprises operators have the capability to strengthen the local economy through mobilizing local resources. This research explores the performance of Micro and Small enterprises and their role in enhancing local economic development in Gullele Sub-City, Addis Ababa. The analysis was based on primary and secondary data collected through administrative type of questionnaires and key informant interviews from the operators, government officials, and enterprise representatives. Contribution of MSEs is viewed in terms of the enterprises’ performance by using their capital, profit, and employment creation. To see their impact, the study also review contribution of MSEs in light of economic improvement of the operators through household income and saving habit, household’s expenditure to food, education, health, durable and non-durable assets. Finally, discussion was held with operators regarding the challenge and opportunities the enterprises and operators are facing now. The results indicate that, MSEs show improvement in their capital and profit. The enterprises’ performance in terms of employment, capital and profit varies based on the sector in the study area. Construction and wood and metal works need high initial capital, they are labor intensive and have higher profit margin than the textile and the food and beverage sub sectors.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Off-farm engagements and earnings from such employment opportunities have become increasingly important in rural Ethiopia as the nation is striving to end poverty through a steadily growing rural income. There is an expressed policy effort to materialize a more stable and growing farm income. However, there is a paucity of policy attention to the off-farm economy notwithstanding its huge potential in diversifying rural income, reducing unemployment and transforming the rural economy. This study analyses offfarm engagements by farm households to drive important implications for policy as farm households’ behavioural choice matters for the desired/undergoing economic transformation. Specifically, we estimate farm households’ propensity to and the intensity of off-farm engagements using binary choice and censored regression models, respectively. We use a survey data of 200 farm households in Libo Kemkem Woreda, Amhara Region. Farm households’ socio-political capital, risk behaviour, financial conditions, characteristics of their farm and local labour market conditions are found to be significant predictors of the choice to off-farm engagements</dc:description>

A questionnaire was answered by 86 respondents in Awash International Bank S.C. The sample of this study is relatively heterogeneous, which allows the researcher to have an overview of the perceptions and behavioral tendencies of a variety of shareholder groups in setting objectives, risk-taking, and in understanding the benefits of investing in shares. The majority of shareholders have long-term objectives and in general high risk taking tendencies were observed. In risktaking, there is a significant difference between gender and among age categories.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This study uses a simultaneous equation approach to investigate the impact of external debt on economic growth in Ethiopia using a macroeconometric model estimated for 1970-2000. The empirical findings reveal that external debt does not affect growth directly. The results indicate that external debt affects investment positively and is statistically significantly indicating external debt in Ethiopian case encourage investment rather than depress it. Furthermore, the result also confirms that there is no sign of crowding out effect through which external debt is hypothesized to affect growth.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The impact of BSC implementation on the organization performance is considered to be an important issue in a current business world in which organizations tries to measure their performance using different performance evaluation systems. This study empirically examines the impact of the four BSC components on performance by taking the case of Ethiopian airlines. The study attempt to highlight the impact of financial, customer, internal process, and learning and growth perspectives, through which the manager should cascaded down the organization strategy to the lower level. The study employed structured questionnaire which was administered on a sample of 336 employees of the airline to examine the impact of BSC implementation on Ethiopian airlines performance. The study used SPSS data techniques specifically linear regression for its analysis. Validity, reliability, and multicollinearity tests were conducted on the data. The data analysis made based on result conducted through correlation and linear regression. The results of linear regression analysis shows that the customer perspective (b=0.359, p < 0.01), internal process perspective (b=0.195, p < 0.01), and learning and growth perspective (b=0.259, p < 0.01) significantly influence the performance of Ethiopian airlines. But financial perspective (b=0.031, p > 0.1) is found to be not significant to influence performance of the airlines in this study. Based on the findings of the study the strength and weakness of BSC implementation in the airline are also identified. Recommendations are made based on the overall findings for possible action which will help further improvement based on the researcher view. This study shows the impact of the three BSC perspectives which significantly affect the performance of Ethiopian Airlines.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The paper examines the effect of demand and supply side factors on Ethiopia’s export performance. Thus the supply side factors are responsible for poor export performance in the country. The study employed a panel data analysis to empirically analyze these determinants in Ethiopia’sfor the period 2007 to 2017. A sample of ten major trading partners was selected to analyze the determinants of total export. Based the Hausman test fixed effect is appropriate to estimate the model for Ethiopia’s export performance. Using fixed model we found that from the supply side factors GDP, LPI, FDI and REER have insignificant effect for Ethiopia’s export performance while(CPI) institutional quality significantly affects the export performance. Whereas on the demand side the per capita income of the trading partner and trade openness significantly affect the export performance. Thus study concludes that in recent years supply side factors become insignificant for the country export performance and due emphasis should be given for supply capacity to improve the export sector.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Employee saving and credit associations (ESCAs) were financial sector operating behind a wall in Ethiopia. The members were dramatically benefited from the associations as a source of financing and investment for several years with a little general public recognition. The sectors are primarily established for the interest of their members, saving, loan financing and an extra dividend on the idle cash saved within the association. The number of cooperatives in general currently approaches 1,500, excluding a small unions and voluntary cooperative not licensed. The study was aimed to determine to what extent the loan management, saving capacity of members, technology adoption, and Literacy status of workers and members had affected performance of ESCAs. As a sample case study ETC ESCA was used. It has 7,200 members from those for 379 sample size questionnaires were distributed and 361 were actually collected and analyzed. The study was facilitated by use of primary data and secondary data. The study adopted descriptive research design and inferential statistics in which multiple regression analysis was applied to the data to examine the effects of explanatory variables on performance of ESCAs. The main finding of the study is that; explanatory variables such as Loan management, Saving capacity of members, Technology adoption, and Literacy status of workers and members have positive significant effect on performance of ESCAs. But Saving capacity of members has no significant effect on performance of ESCAs. All explanatory variables have strong positive correlation with the performance of ESCAs.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Financial inclusion is enabling the delivery of banking services at an affordable cost to the vast sections of disadvantaged and low-income groups. It is becoming a core element in economic growth, development, and poverty alleviation. Based on a nationally representative crosssectional data from the Ethiopian Socio-economic Survey (ESS) carried out in 2015/16, this paper investigates the effect of financial inclusion on household’s income in Ethiopia. The study employed both descriptive and econometric approaches to data analysis. In the econometric section, Quantile regression and Propensity Score Matching methods have been used in order to control for endogeneity problem that may exist among financial inclusion and income. The finding indicates that access to finance has a significant positive effect on household's income. Financial inclusion has a larger effect on the lower quantiles of household income. The 10th quantile income of financially excluded households is 37 percent lower than financially included households while the top 90th quantile income of financially exclude households is 17percent lower than of financially included households. This shows financial inclusion benefits more low-income households than high-income households, which supports those findings that argue financial inclusion lowers poverty and income inequality</dc:description>

<dc:description>The main purpose of the research was to analyze the marketing and sales strategies of ELFORA Agro-Industries Plc. Since its establishment, the company’s profitability and return on investment has been very low, even when it is compared to the current bank saving rate of 4%. The study tried to identify the major marketing and sales problems that contributed to such unsatisfactory level of financial performance. In order to address those problem issues, the researcher conducted interview with the relevant company managers and referred secondary data sources. The collected data and information were compiled and analyzed for possible indications of problem areas. It was found that the main marketing and sales factors that contributed to the low profit level to be the under utilization of existing production and auxiliary facilities, inconsistency in product supply and delivery, inadequate and inconsistent demand for some of the company’s products, high cost of production due to low capacity utilization and untimely purchase of raw material inputs, which resulted in higher prices than competitors leading to loss of market share.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Background: Helminths are potent immunomodulators and chronic infections may protect against allergy-related disease and atopy. They are also known for inducing allergic conditions. This study was aimed to assess the association between helminths and atopy and allergic conditions. Objective: To assess the association between intestinal helminth infection and atopy/allergic outcomes in young children in Batu, Ethiopia. Methods: Questionnaire data on allergic symptoms and a range of confounding variables was gathered in a cross-sectional study of 461 children aged from 2 to 14 years from Batu. Allergic skin sensitization to house dust mite and cockroach was measured, and a stool sample collected for qualitative and quantitative geohelminth analysis. Serum IgE using ELISA and Manual eosinophil count were measured. Data was entered and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Results: Overall sensitivity to both allergens was 2.6 %. Self - reported allergic outcomes in the last 12 months for the 461 participants had been; wheeze (3.7%), asthma (2.2%), eczema (13.2%), and hay fever (6.9%). A burden of 8.1% (36/444) was recorded for helminths. A borderline significant association was found between atopy and any allergy symptoms [OR 3.32 (95% CI: 0.99, 11.1), P = 0.052]. There was no significant association between helminths and atopy [OR 0.64 (95% CI: 0.29, 1.41) p = 0.268] and also between helminths and allergic symptoms [OR 0.64 (95% CI: 0.29, 1.41) p = 0.268]. Bivariate analysis showed keeping animas in the house associated with atopy while maternal and paternal history of allergy associated with allergic symptoms in the children.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The Unified Billing System (UBS) project, as part of E-Gov initiatives, is one of the major interventions by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT), Ethiopia, to unify the bill payment of various utilities for the convenience and benefit of citizens. It focuses on enhancing the quality of Service available to the citizen through re-defining the way citizens pay their utility bills which was introduced based on public-private partnership between the Ministry of Information and Communication and a private company named Kifiya Financial Technology. With this premise, this paper is an attempt to understand the contribution of UBS and its various challenges and bottlenecks that are being faced in making this system sustainable. The system is able to reduce the burden the government face financially and in deploying the essential expertise, it has also created an opportunity to improve government service delivery to citizens, and within government agencies by creating more transparency, greater convenience, less corruption, revenue growth and cost reduction. It has also created job opportunities to the young unemployed. It is however, noteworthy that these perceived benefits to the citizens from this project can only be accrued when Lehulu centres met the expectation of citizens and accelerate the service delivery. The study also reveals that there was lack of coordination at the government’s end in terms of having no structured framework for complaint handling and no risk mitigation plan in place for a project of this dimension. Moreover, as the system is not yet synchronized, citizens are charged more than their regular bill. This is of utmost importance in order to upgrade UBS as a key actor to enhance public service delivery. The study calls for an improved enabling environment for citizens like UBS to improve integrated Public Service Delivery</dc:description>
